What Google doesn’t want you to know

by Jim April 27, 2011

There are a lot of things that Google will freely tell you about your website. With a combination of Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools there isn’t much more that you’d want to know… except one thing. Probably one of the most important things when it comes to getting a page ranked in Google. Has Google seen it? Has Google actually visited your shiny new page? A lot of people tell me that is what the Google cache date is for. The cache only tells you things after the fact, after the bot has been. With the right tools you can not make sure the bot crawls your page you can direct it as well. In today’s video I show you the tools I use in WordPress to make sure Google has seen my page.

Seth Godin – Opportunity

Seth Godin wrote a blog post today called “Opportunity”. As you would expect it is a really good read. The paragraph I like the most though is this one “Google is connecting buyers and sellers over vaster distances, more efficiently and more cheaply than ever before.” In today’s video I review some buying I did over the weekend from a seller that was a long way away but with a price 66% cheaper than the local one.I could have asked my social network like many of the Social Media Gurus suggest but that would have taken too long. Even if I posted a question via Twitter and it updated on Facebook and FriendFeed, how many of my contacts would have seen it at that moment? When we go shopping, Google is our first port of call. In the end, I made the purchase from a well known online retailer. I had no idea this retailer sold this item but they came up in a Google search. Even if you have a great brand, coming up in search for products & services you provide is important no matter how big your brand is.
