The New SEO Is The Old SEO

by Jim November 13, 2013

I see SEO Companies keep talking about the “new SEO” methods. What they really mean it’s less easy to game the algorithm now and you have to think about things like content on your site. Revolutionary huh? It’s only what Google has been saying for about the last 10 years. The “new SEO” is the old SEO. The only thing we have changed this year is ramped up our content creation for clients in quantity & quality. Once you have amped up the performance of your site and cleaned the Google index of any rogue pages, the next part is the hard part.

1. Write interesting stuff

As much as I’d like to write an article about SEO Melbourne today to help with the ranking of that phrase, I can’t think of anything remotely interesting to write on the topic. When Google says publish great content, they mean it. The algorithm is so sophisticated now it can detect rubbish content. When I say rubbish content I’m talking about content that is “spun” by software or full of spelling mistakes. It’s less capable of detecting content that is boring or not worth sharing. So what does it do? It rewards content that does get shared. So if you are writing content purely for ranking purposes that is not a good idea. We employ bloggers to research and write articles on behalf of our clients. Old SEO was to outsource that task to someone you paid $5 for 500 words. I’m not saying you can’t use your keywords, of course you have to. The mistake I still see people make though is that use their keywords like they’re some sort of essential filling in an alphabet sausage . It usually goes something like this; If you are looking for an SEO Melbourne company then use us. We have lots of SEO Melbourne in stock..” etc etc . If you don’t talk like that, don’t write that… if you do talk like that please stay away from me at the next networking event.

2. Get it shared

For our clients that write their own content I recommend using bufferapp.com to share it across various networks. I like bufferapp as it will not only share on a lot of different networks but it will share to them when your connections are most active. This means you have the largest potential audience for your articles and posts. You will see in today’s video an example of how this helped me jump onto the front page for an SEO related phrase.

3. Monitor the results

Once you publish monitor the changes in Webmaster tools search queries. I do this everyday, for our site and our clients. Every frickin day. Let me say that again.. EVERY DAY. It will help you understand not only what people are searching for but give you an idea of what phrases are moving up in the rankings. Watch today’s video to see what I mean.

SEO Melbourne Impressions
More content means more impressions

4. Look for new opportunities

Based on what you have written previously and the traffic it is generating start to think about your next article. Remember that series I did on the SEO consultant? I was not only telling a story, I was running an experiment. The ranking of every article I wrote in that series informed what the next one would be about. For instance, recently I have written 3 articles about SEO Experts as I wanted to understand how hard it would be to rank for that phrase as well see what the traffic was like for it. Primarily though I wanted to tell a story about spammers. The story comes first and then the keywords.
