New Year’s Eve Melbourne

by Jim December 16, 2012

We’re working with a new client at the moment who has a site dedicated to New Years Eve events. It’s amazing the amount of activity in this space. The amount of search traffic that is now spiking will culminate with many terabytes of data being moved and that will just be for Melbourne searches. Given the celebrated cases of server outages this year our client is preparing well by having the site on a content distribution network. We’ve been working on getting the Time To First Byte speed as low as possible. We’ve managed to shave 50-60% off the speed.  For a site like New Years Eve, getting all those functional requirements is great for the user experience as well as the crawlers. Good performance = good user experience. It’s been interesting working on this site just to find out what the City of Melbourne have planned for this New Years Eve. As someone who has never ventured into the city (in fact dedicated to stay away from it) on NYE I was surprised how much they cater for families as I thought it would be just a night of drunken brawls & glassings, apparently not 🙂
