Google Chrome

by Jim September 2, 2008

I’ll do a show on this tomorrow but I wanted to give put the link up today. So what is Google Chrome? It has nothing to do with chroming, the Aussie slang for sniffing petrochemical based substances.

Google Chrome is a new browser. You may think it a little odd that Google should release it’s own browser but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

The main problem with accessing the net for most people is that they have to have a windows PC. That means usually forking out around $1000 for a hunk of tin that will be obsolete in 18 months.

Whilst the user base of general computing continues to grow, so does the user base who only need a browser on a mobile device.

They do not need a bloated operating system to simply access the net. Heck, most people only use their PCs these days to access the net for email and web, maybe a little bit of word processing. So the future for most users is device dominant – i.e. iphone, android, STBs etc. The OS is not a part of this picture.

What I am now waiting for is to find out what deals Google is doing with device manufacturers. Initially Google Chrome will only be available for Windows users but they are working on a Mac and Linux version as well. More in the show tomorrow.
