Facebook Launches Timeline… In New Zealand

by Jim December 8, 2011

Lord of the Rings hits Facebook New Zealand Facebookers are in for a surprise today, with the social giant rolling out their long-awaited Timeline profile redesign to the country exclusively this morning.

While Timeline has been in beta for Facebook third-party developers for some time, New Zealand will serve as the primary testing ground for the product’s rollout. To many tech pundits the New Zealand launch is a curious move, one that Facebook explained as deliberate in our phone interview earlier today.

“We’re integrating slowly into that market first, monitoring closely and learning from the rollout” Facebook told us, adding that although no additional rollout plans are set in stone, Australian Facebook users should see the changes soon.

Facebook Product Manager Sam Lessin elaborated on the choice for Timeline’s New Zealand launch, telling The New Zealand Herald, “We’re definitely taking our time with this one. [New Zealand is] far from our data centres, so we can monitor speed and performance”

While Facebook’s Timeline was originally announced at Facebook’s f8 developer conference back in September and set to launch soon after, legal troubles and privacy issues have hampered the launch.
