Authority for technical standards

by Jim September 7, 2011

If your business specialises in products that have a technical aspect to them, make sure you optimise you technical fact PDF’s.

Whether it be a chemical based product, machinery or electronic componentry, people use Google to research technical aspects of products. If the PDF’s on your site outrank those of your competitors, the customer will end up on your site and not theirs.

Make your tech sheets unique.

Sometimes there might be one tech sheet supplied by a manufacturer that all your competitors have as well, which equates to duplicate content. There are a number of things you can do to make your PDFs unique such as:
Embedding them – Put them on your letterhead if you are allowed to and then make sure you have links in the pdf back to key pages within your site.
Adding content – If you can think about how you can add content that better defines the technical context. Either an introduction or “callouts” with the document.
Creating PDF metadata – A lot of people forget that PDF’s have metadata where you can edit titles, keywords and author information.

Be the resource

Above all, if you know there are online communities that discuss the types of products you supply, get involved in the discussion and if appropriate, point people to your PDFs. Remember to maintain the links to these resources you have created because Google may still be discovering backlinks to your content years from now. They all count.
