Workchoice 29/11/2006

2 days ago this page seem to drop out of the Google index after being no.1 for over a year for the word workchoice. Because this page has not been updated for a year I think that is why it has dropped out of the index altogether. Also we recently had an outage and the bot may have visited us on the same day saw the site was down and removed some page from the index. Only time will tell!

Note:At the time of writing this article (12/10/2005) the Govt's web page referred to below placed in 10th position on Google. Changes were then made to their site and the page is now placed in the top 3 in Google Australia. This page is now no.4 in Google Australia for the phrase workchoice after being live for 36 hours.

WorkChoice Industrial Relations Policy

Search Engine Optimisation Newsletter - October

WorkChoice, the Howard Government's new industrial and workplace relations policy was launched on our TVs last night. It seemed there was an ad for it in every ad break of every show.

Reportedly the Government is spending millions of dollars on the promotion of the policy to Australians. But someone, somewhere has stuffed up. Little or no effort seems to have been put into search engine optimisation or pay per click advertising on the word WorkChoice.

The Government's campaign last night kept the word WorkChoice up in front of us all the time. However the website for the new policy is actually http://workchoices.gov.au notice the plural? Not Workchoice.
Not a big deal you may think but all the chatter on the Internet is about Workchoice not Workchoices
So when the press writes about it they use the singular and not the plural, when people are searching they are using the singular not the plural. It is a very simple exercise to have both addresses registered but the Government has not done it.

"Howard's Workchoice - Take The Job or Take The Sack"

This is the phrase that jumps out at you when you search for workchoice
in Google. The link is to ALP leader Kim Beazley's press release on the policy. I am sure this is not what the Government intended. In ninemsn it is not much better. There are no Government references to workchoice
at all.

In Google worldwide, the top reference is to a New Zealand site, then the ABC, then the ALP and right down in 10th spot is the workchoice Government site. Which usually isn't too bad, however in this case it is a disaster because of the sites ranked above for such a major campaign. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if within a week this article rates higher than the Government's site .

All the latest surveys show that Australians are turning more and more to the Internet for extra information about current events. Unfortunately for the Government's online marketers their message will not be the one they see.

More Mistakes

  • As we have discussed before if you are using headings for articles don't use graphics use text. The Workchoice site has used graphics.
  • Make sure you use you keywords in your links the Workchoice site has not done this.
  • There are a bunch of other errors but quite frankly it would take me a while to document them all here and I'd rather charge them a consulting fee to do it!
